Crochet in the round and the seam

There are several posibillities to crochet tube like shapes:

  • you can continous crochet in the round in spirals, therefore you have to mark your first stitch to know in which row you are.
  • you can crochet in the round and turn your work after every round and work the needed number of turning chains
  • you can close every round with a slip stitch and continue to the next round with the needed number of chains without turning your garment.

Whenever I’ve chosen the last posibility I ended up with a diagonal seam, as you can see on the picture on the left (the blue yarn was used for better visibility), even if I didn’t increase or decrease but worked an even number of stitches.

I searched the internet and reread my crochet books to solve this problem and finally I found out what I did wrong. Credits go to Crochetville and their great villagers corky264, nightowl and Aggie May.

What went wrong (How not to do it)

While crocheting in the round I made one big mistake: I slip stitched to the wrong position. I did this example in single crochet to illustrate my error.

I knew I had to place theslip stitch in the chain that compensates the heighs of one round to the next (turning chain). But in fact I had been slip stitching all the time to the adjactend stitch (in this case a single crochet stitch).

clickable The chain I would have been supposed to slip stitch to was simply so tiny and looked so meaningless, that I thought it to be the slip stitch of the previous round.

For better visibility the last stitch of the round is pulled through with blue yarn and the "turning" chain is done in blue yarn, too:

If the slip stitch is made in the "turning" chain of the last row, the seam should be (more or less) straight.

Concerning single crochet, it also would be possible to crochet two chains instead of one turning chain. The slip stitch then would be located in the second one of the chains. Correspondingly the slip stitch would be placed in the third chain (top most chain) when working double crochets.

If you are like me and have a undefinable detest to put your slip stitch into that odd looking, tiny turning chain, then you can try the method crochetvill vilager corky264 suggested to me:

Leave out the turning chain and place your slip stitch in the top of the first "real chain" (sc in this case) of the previous round, do the turning chain, work another stitch in the same place you slip stitched to and start counting with this stitch.

Nightowl’s alternative slip stitch techniques

A)clickable

If you don’t like the look of the seam at all you may want to try one of the following techniques, that were suggested by crochetville member nightowl. They deal with the way the slip stitch is made in general. After the last stitch of the round you have to remove the hook from the loop and insert it again at the place you want the join, then you pull through the loop you just droped from the hook and work the turning chain(s).

You archive a different looking seam by the way you insert the hook:

A) either from front to back

B) or from back to front

A) Hook inserted rom front to back:

 After you have crocheted the last stitch of the round remove the hook from the loop, insert it in the turning chain of the previous round and catch the loop of the last stitch.

 Pull the loop of the last stitch through the turning chain

B) Hook inserted rom back to front:
1. clickable After you have crocheted the last stitch of the round remove the hook from the loop, insert it in the turning chain of the previous round from back to front.
2. clickable Catch the loop of the last stitch (I needed to turn the work therefore)
3. clickable Pull the loop of the last stitch through the turning chain

 Crochet the needed number of turning chains (I felt more comfortable with two chains instead of one in this case)
