Easy Dog Sweater
Tutorial (Kind of)
This
is more a sheme than a pattern. Since the sweater has to fit your personal
dog it’s recomended that you meassure your dog’s sizes. Read through the directions
first to decide if you like it at all. You might also want to check out the gallery to see what others did with this pattern.

Materials:
Yarn:
Any yarn you like. I suggest wool because it doesn’t absorbe water.
I used left-overs from “Dasolo” by Lana Grossa, different colors
87 % Merino extrafine
13 % Polyamide
Length: 75m/50g
Size of Needles: 7-8
Hook(s)
I used a Size J crochet hook (6.0 mm)
and a Size K crochet hook (7.0 mm)Note: I always use a bigger hook for the starting chain then for the rest of the work, otherwise my fabrics simply don’t get the right shape and tend to get wider with every row.
Measure tape
Yarn needle
Stitch marker
Gauge:
5 st = 2 "; 4 rows = 2 " (10 st = 10 cm; 8.5 rows = 10 cm)
Pattern Stitches (US terms):
chain stitch (ch)
back post dc (bpdc)
double crochet (dc)
front post dc (fpdc)
half double crochet(hdc)
reverse single crochet (rsc)
single crochet (sc)
slip stitch (slst)
Special Stitches (I used in the colorful dogsweater version):
These directions refer to crocheted nubs in a color that differs from the main color, certainly you don’t have to change colors.Anyway, if you don’t like the following stitches you don’t have to use these at all. I just put them here to document what I did.
Puff stitch 1 (at the center of the pullover
part):
First finish a hdc with the your color of choice for the knob:
With color A: 2 hdc, Yo, insert hook in next st, yo, pull lp through st
With color B: Yo, pull lp through all 3 lps on hook
The "nub" itself:
With color B: *Yo, insert hook around corresponding hdc one rd lower, yo, pull lp through** rep 3 more times (until you have 9 lps on hook), yo, pull lp through 8 of the lps on your hook
With color A + B: Yo, pull lp through remaining 2 lps on hook
Puff stitch 2 (one row befor the last polover part row)
First finish a hdc with the your color of choice for the nub:
With color A: Yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull lp through
stWith color B: Yo, pull lp through all 3 lps on hook,
The "nub" itself:
With color B: *yo, insert hook in same st, pull long lp through st** rep 3 more times (until you have 9 lps on hook), yo, pull lp through 8 of the lps on your hook,
With color A: Yo, pull lp through remaining 2 lps on hook, sk one stitch
Abbreviations:
ch = chain;
dc = double crochet;
dec = decrease;
inc = increase;
lp(s) = loop (s);
mm = millimeters;
pat = pattern;
rep = repeat;
rnd(s);= round (s);
sc = single crochet;
sk = skip;
sp = space;
st(s); = stitch (es);
yo = yarn over hook;
* or ** = repeat whatever follows the * or ** as indicated.

Shematic Drawing:
Directions:
Note: The cuff and the pullover part are worked in rounds, the back blanket from side to side.
CUFF
Ch as many stitches as you need to get the neck circumference A (look up meassure table), if you don’t want it to be too tight add some more stitches. (In my case Ch 40, with bigger crochet hook see Note above). Slst to first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (count as first dc), work a dc in any ch of the ring. (In my case 40 dc), slst in top of Ch 3 to end rnd.
Rnd 2: Ch 2, *fpdc, bpdc**, rep till end of rnd, slst in top of Ch 2 to end rnd.
Rnd 3 - Rnd X (in my case Rnd 3 - Rnd 4): Repeat Rnd 2 till you reach the desired lenght B off your cuff (look up meassure table). Work stitches as they appear, thus a fpdc around each fpdc and a bpdc around each bpdc.
Secure last st with a stitch marker because now it’s time for the first fitting.
PULLOVER PART
Increasing Rounds:
Remove stitch marker from cuff part to continue crocheting in rounds. Now you have to increase to fit the breast circumfence C (look up meassure table). In my case I increased in the next two rounds, If your dog is taller than mine, you’ll probably have to increase more rounds, if your dog is smaller, one round might be enough. Try to figuer out, how many stitches you’ll need to get to the breast circumfence C, do a gauge piece for example. Sorry that I’m so vague at this point, just test it and if you are not satisfied rip up, that’s part of the process.
I crocheted the body (pullover) part using hdc, naturally you can use what ever sticht you like.
Inc Rnd 1: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc around, inc as many stitches as you find appropriate.
Note: If your dog wears a collar you’ll want to leave a hole for the eye so you can attache the leash later. Therefor find the middle of your garment (opposite the slst seam) and mark stitches to the left and right of the middle in the distance of the collar eye D (look up meassure table). Do not hdc in to this part but ch as many st as you marked and skip the marked ones, hdc again into the next unmarked st. Since our dog wears a harness rather than a collar I made this kind of hole naturally later at the back level.
Slst to top of Ch 2 to end rnd. (In my case, I inc every second stich and thereby got 60 hdc)
inc Rnd 2: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc around, inc as many stitches as you find appropriate, slst to top of Ch 2 to end rnd. (In my case, I inc every 10th stich and thereby got 66 hdc)
When you have inc enough rnds to fit the breast circumfence C (look up meassure table), Fasten off.
Space for the Legs:
Note: If your dog is small or your yarn is very big you probably don’t have to crochet two rounds for the leg spacings. Then you can continue working in rounds and just have to leave holes in the garmet by skiping the appropriate number of sts with the corresponding nuber of ch sts. But if your dog is middle size or bigger you’ll have to work more than one round .
At the bottom:
Find the seam (where you finished your rounds by a slst), mark stitches to the left and right in a distance smaller than the distance between your dogs front legs E (look up meassure table). (I marked 4 st to the left and 4 to the right). Attache yarn and hdc between your markers (In my case 6 hdc), Fasten off.
At the top:
1. Find the top middle of your garment and mark equal stitches to the left and right in the meassured shoulder distance F (look up meassure table). (I marked 11 st to the left and 11 to the right). Attache yarn, Ch 2 (for first hdc), and hdc across the stitches between your markers ( In my case 20 hdc), turn.
Note: All rows of the pullover part of the dogsweater are crocheted in rounds except this one. When you look close at the garment, you can tell that one row is
different. If you don’t want this effect you have to fasten off and attache the yarn again at the first stitch of your last row to make sure that you crochet only in one direction.
2. Ch 2 (counts as first hdc) and hdc back across every stitch of previous hdc row. When you reach the end ch as many stitches as you’ve left out for the dog’s leg (20 ch in my case), join to bottom row with a hdc, hdc over the bottom hdc row ( 6 hdc in my case), ch again ch as many stitches as you’ve left out for the dog’s leg (again 20 ch in my case), join top row with slst to first hdc and close round thereby. Cut yarn.
Chest
Rnd 1: Find the middle at the bottom part to continue the seam of the garment at this place and attache the yarn.
Ch 2 (for first hdc), and hdc across all sts of the previous round (including the chs), slst in top of Ch 2 to end rnd. Your number of stitches is the same as the number of stitches after the increasing rounds (In my case 66 hdc altogether).
Note: Do not forget to leave a hole for the eye where the lash will be attached later in case your dog wears a harness. Therefor meassure the distance from your dogs neck to the eye of the harness G (look up meassure table). Find the middle of your garment (opposite the slst seam) and mark stitches to the left and right of the middle in the distance of the eye D(look up meassure table). Do not hdc in to this part but ch as many st as you marked and skip the marked ones, hdc again into the next unmarked st.
Rnd 2 : Ch 2 (for first hdc), hdc across all sts of the previous round, slst in top of Ch 2 to end rnd.
Rnd 3 - X (in my case Rnd 3 - Rnd 24): Repeat Rnd 2 till you reach the desired lenght H off your dogsweater pullover part(look up meassure table)
Note: Work a Cuff at the End of the pullover part (perhaps again some fpdc, bpdc rounds) or crochet a puff stitch round to define the edge to the blanket part.
Fasten off.
It’s time for another fitting.
BLANKET
Find the top middle of the dog pullover and mark an equal number of stitches to the left and right in the side distance I (look up meassure table). Attache yarn.
Row 1: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), work hdcs in the back loops of all sts between your stitch markers at the top side of the dogsweater, (in my case 46 hdc), turn.
Row 2 - X (in my case row 2 - 14): Repeat Row 1 until you reach the desired blanket width J (look up meassure table).
Decreasing Rows (in my case row 15 - 24): Decrease 1 st at the beginning and 1 st at the end of each row for your desired distance K(look up meassure table).
FINISHING - ADD SOME DETAIL
For example: sc or rsc around the blanket part/the leg holes/ the cuff or in the front lps of the last pulloverpard rnd (if you attached the blanket by crocheting only in the back lps of the pullover). Make some tassles or embroidery. Make your dogsweater simply unique.

Thank you so much for this pattern. If I had a small dog, I would crochet it instantly :O) I linked to the pattern in a previous post in my blog. I somehow find it scary to post comments on foreign blogs….sorry for not commenting last time I visited! You have a lovely site :O)

Thank you for having this pattern for us to use. I have tried several other knit/crochet sweaters for my odd sized Chinese Crested, but none have turned out correctly. I am so happy that you have drawn pictures for those of us who are more visual in our learning. I will get to this as soon as my arthritis pain decreases and let you know how I did. Thank you again!

[…] Some days ago I got mail from Sharon, who wanted to post pictures of her dog bambi and the sweaters she had crocheted for her using my Easy Dog Sweater Pattern. I decided to add a gallery page for all who have tried that pattern and want to share their work. I’m always thrilled whenever I get feedback so if you would like to post a picture of your personal version of the dog sweater pattern, feel free to leave a comment here, I’ll happily add your picture to the gallery. Maybe you’ll also want to include some information about yourself, your dog, the yarn, hook or pattern spezific remarks. […]
